The manufacturer of my 48X CD-R writer states that media used in the writer must be 48X certified. Is this just an attempt to control my choices of media?

All media did not perform well in 48X writers. Your manufacturer performed a valid service in advising users of acceptable CD-R discs. Today, a few discs may be unsuitable for 48X recording, even though they perform well at lower speeds. Thorough testing will provide the answer.

New optimum power calibration methods are now available for high speed writing using relaxed beta values and special shaping of the laser pulse. Appropriate information is encoded by the manufacturer into the unrecorded disc, and can be read by newer recording drives. You should ask the appropriate suppliers regarding such capabilities of their products.
